Texas State Library & Archives Commission Graphics Designer

Graphic & Web Design and Photography & Digital Imaging

Archives staff requested a collateral set to be produced to promote the Texas State Library & Archives (TSLAC) during archives month — a poster and bookmarks for ongoing promotion. The poster was distributed to archives, libraries and universities nationally. The book marks were distributed to schools and libraries. Following a press release featuring the poster and demand at the Texas Book Festival, the supply of posters was depleted. Local library and school staff quickly deleted the supply of bookmarks.

I worked with a team of 4 Archivists to decide upon an overarching theme — Go to Texas — while expressing the diversity of Texans and a friendly vibe. The archivists researched and pulled maps, broadsides, photographs, and letters from the State Archives. I very carefully, with white gloves on, scanned nearly 100 items, some of them from the 1880s. I produced graphics of the items with Photoshop. I choose a contemporary collage style, south-western color theme, and laid-out the poster iteration mockups and final designs in InDesign. I typeset the titles with an open source Typeface. The design iterations were done on the computer and often the team and I would make changes together at the computer. I had wanted a much more western gunge typeface, but we compromised and used the ones seen here. I also coordinated with a local printer to print the collateral and managed the budget coming in underneath the max.

It was after the work I had done for the fundraising group supporting TSLAC, Friends of Libraries & Archives of Texas (FLAT), I was asked to produce the Archives Month collateral. These are just some of the items I have produced for TSLAC and FLAT. Due to State Records Management requirements, I did not get to keep my sketches and notes for these projects. The FLAT brochure and Texas Book Festival were printed and assembled in house. The FLAT cards gift set were printed by a local printer.

You can also see my work in many places on the Texas State Library & Archives website:
Travis’ 1836 Victory or Death Letter from the Alamo online exhibit — produced the digital imagery for the PDFs and the webpage.

Voices of Texas History Online Exhibit — photography of Governor Rick Perry and Former First Lady Laura Bush, produced the digital imagery for the PDFs and web pages development and design.

2009–2013 — Under Construction: A New Building for A New Century of Service to Texans — Long-form publications, photography and digital imaging.
